FOCUS AREAS

Materials

Rural and urban communities across the Americas are highly dependent on imported products to satisfy the communities’ needs in the daily life. Nowhere is this issue more pressing than in island nations. The unsustainable use and disposal of these products are increasingly leading to serious health and environmental problems.

ASDF assesses the material balance of islands, cities, municipalities and towns as the starting point for identifying challenges and opportunities for improving the type, volume and quality of materials imported, consumed and disposed of.

ASDF applies a holistic approach to this challenge by addressing current waste problems with a vision of transitioning towards sustainable production and consumption, sustainable materials management, and integrating the Cradle to Cradle® design and manufacturing philosophy.
